Trees for Wakefield (TFW) was founded in 1989 by Tom Mullen and Chris David to work for the beautification and preservation of our town’s natural environment by promoting the planning, care and preservation of trees. TFW recognized early on the importance of being part of the “Tree City USA” initiative and with the DPW’s assistance, the town was accepted into its membership in 2001.
Through the years, TFW purchased and planted “street” trees throughout the town’s neighborhoods and public lands, and donated tree planting equipment to the Wakefield DPW which greatly reduced their number of man hours to plant streets. Also, TFW welcomed the townspeople’s questions and concerns, and rescued damaged and vandalized trees. TFW oversaw many coordinated projects with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, the Wakefield Center Neighborhood Association, Wakefield Garden Club, and local business leaders. One of these projects was the revitalization of the Floral Way behind the Hartshorne House. TFW donated many educational supplies and books concerning the importance of keeping Wakefield green to all of the schools and to the library. TFW also held many hands-on educational programs in the schools and at the tree nursery.
Their hope is that the legacy of this organization may continue this scholarship when awarded to a student pursuing Environmental Sciences, Horticulture, Ecology and the Green Sciences.
