Dominic P. & Shirley M. Martino Memorial Fund

Dominic Martino was a lifelong resident of Wakefield. He was born on November 6, 1921 and he died of cancer at the age of 80 on May 18, 2002. Mr. Martino was a graduate of WHS Class of 1940. An outstanding athlete, he was inducted into the WHS Athletic Hall of Fame. While baseball was his most notable sport, “Min” as he was known, was a three-sport athlete. He also played football and basketball. In baseball, Min was a pitcher, outfielder and captain of the 1940 team, batting .322. Overall, he earned 7 letters. In 1942, he enlisted in the Navy and served during WWII until 1945. Mr. Martino was employed as a Union Carpenter. He was married to Shirley Rutledge, a native of Wakefield’s West Side, and they had three sons and a daughter. They were active in both St. Florence and Most Blessed Sacrament Churches. Mr. Martino had also been involved with the Crystal Community Club and as a Little League coach.
