William P. Hatch, WHS Class of 1938, was a welding engineer in research at the Army Materials and Mechanic Research Center in Watertown, MA for 35 years. He acquired his engineering and management degree at Northeastern after many years of attending college in the evening. He was a member and past chairman of the American Welding Society and the recipient of the District Meritorious Certificate Award. He authored many papers on weldability of materials and weldability testing. He held a patent on the attachment of rotating band to shell casing by brazing. He believed in higher education and in the availability of scholarships. He died in 1977.
Mildred, sharing in his belief in higher education, established this fund in his memory. This fund has a preference for a student pursuing an engineering career. Mildred served in the Women’s Army Corp during World War II and worked in the Charlestown Navy Yard following the war. She was a member of the Sons of Italy Lodge of Wakefield and St. Joseph Church. She married Mr. Louis Bagley some years after the death of Mr. Hatch. Mildred died in 1999 and Louis in 2015.
