His golfing friends established this fund at the time of Jean Hartshorne’s death in the summer of 1995. Mr. Hartshorne was a descendent of one of Wakefield’s oldest families. He graduated from WHS Class of 1939 and received both his BS and MS degrees from MIT. After serving during World War II and the Korean War as a pilot, he remained in the US Air Reserves, retiring as a Full Colonel. Jean returned to Wakefield where he served as a president of Charles F. Hartshorne Insurance. He was active in many civic groups including the Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, and the Board of the Wakefield Municipal Light Dept. Mr. Hartshorne also loved to travel, visiting each of the 50 states, Africa, New Zealand, and Costa Rica. He was instrumental in setting up the John J. Kennedy Fund, following the death of the President.
