In 1991 a close friend of Joe and Ruth Nolan, on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary, initiated this fund. Long time Wakefield residents, the Nolans had been active supporters of their community for many years. Joe was an associate of the late attorney Bill Lee, and was instrumental in the establishment of the Alexander MacIntosh Fund, which provides many TSF scholarships every year. Joe Nolan was a former featherweight champion. He was training for the 1940 Olympic Games when the war broke out and canceled the Games. Joe served in an Army Field Artillery unit serving in the South Pacific in the now famous operations at Guadalcanal. He was the author of a World War II history “Under the Southern Cross.” He later graduated from Boston University School of Law and worked for the Veterans Administration. In 2001 he died at the age of 85 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
