Madeline Ruthfield was born November 10, 1913 in Wakefield, and was a life-long resident. Her family has been in Wakefield for more than 100 years. Her father was a businessman who founded Spero Furniture, which was located on Main Street in the building most recently occupied by Ristorante Molise and other businesses. After high school graduation, Madeline met Abraham Ruthfield, who was born in Zaslav, Russia, and they were married June 17, 1936. Madeline stayed at home to raise their two very successful sons, Richard and Barry. Abraham was the founder of A. Ruthfield Co. Fur, a purveyor of ladies apparel with stores in Boston. Madeline and Abraham were co-founders along with 21 other couples of Temple Emanuel in Wakefield. Madeline was president of the Temple Sisterhood, was awarded the Woman of Valor honor, and for 40 years was the financial secretary. Abraham served as president of Temple Emanuel. Madeline was predeceased by her husband. They were married 50 years. This fund has a preference for a student studying math and science.
