This scholarship was originally established upon the death of Sandra Cook on March 11, 2005 at the age of 85. Sandra was born in Millinocket, Maine in 1919. After attending high school in her hometown, she attended the Massachusetts Memorial School of Nursing and Boston University School of Nursing. She was a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army stationed in Texas. Prior to her retirement, she worked as a nursing supervisor in the West Roxbury Veterans Hospital. She was an avid reader and spent many hours quilting, needle pointing and entertaining her family and friends. She was a member of the Wakefield Arts and Crafts Society. She was married to Frederick A. Cook for 49 years. They had two children, Joanne and Fred, Jr. Mr. Cook’s name was added to the fund upon his death at age 82 in 2005. He had been a lifelong resident of Wakefield and was a graduate of Wakefield High School. He served in the Army during WWII. Mr. Cook was the retired owner of Wakefield Telephone Answering Service. Active in local affairs, he was a member of the Wakefield Rotary Club where he was a past President and editor of the Rotary Club News. He was twice the recipient of the distinguished Paul Harris Fellow Award given to outstanding Rotarians. He was also a Mason and member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
