Karen Smith, an outstanding member of the Wakefield High School Class of 1966, was active in school as a cheerleader, class secretary and valedictorian of her graduating class. She embarked on a very successful career as a city planner in Denver, CO and later became head of the Aspen/Pitkin County Planning Office in Aspen. In 1983 she established her own consulting firm, Planning and Management Services, in Aspen. She was a director of several professional societies, including the Colorado Open Lands.
Karen was devoted to her professional career in community planning when in 1984, on her way home from a client meeting, she was tragically killed in a car accident on mountain roads when a trailer being pulled by a bus unhitched and smashed in her car. Karen’s mother, Barbara Smith, served as a director of The Scholarship Foundation of Wakefield for many years
