Annual award given to a boy or girl in both Cross Country and Track who shows the characteristics of these two Coaches. Both coaches gave above and beyond of their time and talent to their athletes and
teams and instilled in them characteristics for life that their athletes never forgot. Those characteristics include strong team spirit, consistent dedication, and being a strong role model to the underclassmen.
Both coaches were involved in the sport of running for 50 years or more. Coach Squires was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame for coaching in 2017 (Only 39 Coaches have been inducted
through 2023). Coach Squires also coached the first highly competitive track club in Boston, The Greater Boston Track Club, which placed 4 runners in the top 10 at the BAA Marathon in 1979. He also coached
marathon greats: Bill Rodgers (Boston winner 4 times), Greg Myer, Dickie Beardsley, and Alberto Salazar. Coach Squires received the Bill Bowerman Award from the National Distance Running Hall of
Fame in 2002.
Coach DiComandrea spent almost 50 years coaching at Wakefield High School. From 1964 to 2011 Coach Deke led Wakefield to more than 400 wins. He won the Middlesex League Cross Country Title
seven times between 1970 and 2001 and the Girls Middlesex League Cross Country Championship six times between 1977 and 1984. Coach Deke’s league meet record was 10 straight titles from 1964 to 1973,
with a record of 100 – 2. Coach Deke’s team won the All-State Cross Country meet in 1972 and was second in 1973. The 1972 team was runner-up in the New England Championship Meet.
