Lee S. Fernald Fund

Lee Scott Fernald was born on October 17, 1952. Lee was the son of Charles D. Fernald and Ruth M. Fernald. Lee welcomed home a brother Robert who was born in 1954 and another brother Stephen who arrived in 1956. Lee died on December 1, 1962 after clinging to life for a week after a tragic garage fire at a neighbor’s house. Lee was carrying a leaky gas can and a friend wanted to see if the dirt that was saturated with gas would burn. The friend lit a match, dropped it, the gas then ignited following a trail to the gas can, which Lee was still holding. When the flames reached the gas can, it exploded, burning Lee just about all of his body. Lee’s name still lives on in Wakefield because Wakefield’s Little League field, Fernald Field, was named after him. Lee’s loving father, Charles “Denny” Fernald, late of Melrose, and who passed away on July 22, 2002, established this fund. It was his life long wish that this fund be created. As stipulated in Mr. Fernald’s last wishes, future scholarship recipients of the Lee S. Fernald Fund will have to have played Wakefield Little League Baseball.
