In 2011, the Wakefield High School Class of 1963 established this permanent scholarship with The Scholarship Foundation of Wakefield. The original scholarship was established by the Class of 1963 at their 10th year reunion. At that time, classmates were looking for a fitting tribute as a memorial to their deceased classmates. A scholarship committee was formed and a unanimous decision was made that awards would initially only be given to descendents of classmates and everyone who applied would be given a scholarship. At the beginning the awards were small, but as originally planned, every application was accepted, and the awards grew as contributions exceeded all expectations. Over the years, the committee has collected and awarded over $40,000 in grants to hundreds of children of class members. They could use the money for tuition or books, and as long as they continued their education, they received yearly checks. As many of the Class of ’63 head toward social security, we assume the last of our children have gone off to college, and it is the Committee’s pleasure to turn over the balance of our class fund to The Scholarship Foundation.
