Former TSF President Jay Landers and his partner Jasper J. Lawson established this fund in November 1998 at the 38th Annual Meeting of The Scholarship Foundation of Wakefield, Inc. They wanted to honor Jasper’s mother Rhudine Johnson, who died of cancer in January 1998, for her life of sacrifice, devotion to her family and God and her emphasis on education. Rhudine was born in rural South Carolina in the 1920s and was a descendant of slaves. Following a visit to Harlem during its Golden Age, she returned home to attend a small Methodist college for colored women. Before she completed school, however, she fell in love and married, eventually giving birth to ten children. Jasper Lawson was her first born. He surely made his mother proud when he followed her dreams and received his Ph.D. degree from Duke University.
