This fund was established in January 2001 shortly after the death, at age 80, of Mr. McConville who had a long and distinguished history of service to the town of Wakefield. A 1938 graduate of Wakefield High School, Mr. McConville earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Boston College in 1942. He then served 39 months in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Following the war, he earned an LLB degree from Boston College Law School in 1950. He passed the bar the following year and set up his law practice in Wakefield. In 1953 he earned a Master of Laws degree from Northeastern University. During his professional lifetime, he served on countless town committees, including as chairman of both the Wakefield School Committee and the 1987 Town Meeting Study Committee. He was one of the longest serving members of the Wakefield Democratic Town Committee. His favorite pastime was tennis and for more than 12 years he proudly captained the Wakefield Tennis Association’s B-1 Greens and even captured a town father-son tennis title.
When his wife, Muriel, died in November 2012, her name was added to the fund. Muriel McConville was the first woman to chair the Wakefield Finance Committee. She was also the former president of the Wakefield Chamber of Commerce, twice in the 1980s, and a former president of the Eastern Middlesex Board of Realtors. This fund has a preference for a student attending Boston College.
