Keith was only six years old when he tragically died in an automobile accident in New Hampshire in 1986. His parents and his brother Kirk survived him. Keith was a promising athlete who memorized the names and statistics of all major league baseball players. Even at his young age, he showed great leadership qualities. On April 30, 1988, at the opening day ceremonies of the Wakefield Little League, one of the new T-Ball fields was officially named the Keith Irons Field.
