This fund was established in memory of Frank P “Flash” Spencer, a life-long Wakefield resident who died in 2000. Mr. Spencer was a Wakefield High School graduate who was an outstanding track athlete; he also excelled in a variety of other sports. Mr. Spencer later served in the Army during World War II and was involved in the invasion of Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge and other campaigns in Europe. He received numerous medals and citations for his War service, including the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Plaque, the American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army of Occupation World War II Medal, the Victory Medal, and the Europe-Africa Middle East Medal with Five Battle Stars. Mr. Spencer retired from the Wakefield Corporation. He was a very active participant in town affairs. He was a member of the Crystal Community Club, a charter member of the Wakefield High School Hall of Fame Committee, the Community Advisory Committee to the Galvin Middle School, & the Wakefield 350 Committee. He was a past commander of AMVETS and, in 1996, was the co-Grand Marshall of the annual Fourth of July Parade in Wakefield. He & his wife Jean raised three daughters and one son.
