This fund was established by the sons of Armando J. “Mundo” & Marie B. Roberto. Mundo was a first generation Italian-American born on September 28, 1926 to Carmen and Maria Rose Roberto. He was their fourth son and one of eight children. His father worked at the Hayward-Wakefield factory. Mundo grew up on Cottage Street during the Great Depression. He worked hard to help his family. He played football at Wakefield High and captained the team his senior year sporting #10. He enlisted in the Navy during his junior year and was able to receive his high school diploma. He served on the cruiser USS Los Angeles and was a plank holder (the name given to a crew member when a ship is placed in commission.) Mundo was a fabulous dancer and the place to go in Wakefield to dance was the Bost House on Lake Quannapowitt. There Mundo met Marie B. Dorazio from Malden. A year later they married and lived briefly over Frannie’s store near the Franklin School. They moved to Summer Street where they raised their three sons, Armando Jr. , Steven and Donald and Mundo worked hard to remodel the family home. Mundo worked many jobs throughout his life, he was a gas station manager, bread maker at Wonder Bread, GE factory worker, pipe coverer at the shipyard in Boston and had his own landscaping business. He son Steve carries on the landscaping business, Roberto Brothers Landscaping. At one point he was working three jobs a day! Marie was also a first generation Italian-American, born on October 7, 1927 to a large Italian family. Her father was a contractor. She had one sister and six brothers. She was an amazing cook. Raising their three sons kept her busy. Both she and Mundo were very committed to supporting their sons in all their endeavors. Mundo and Marie were very proud of their sons and their grandchildren and great grandchildren. They were hardworking folks who knew the importance of education but they could not afford college for their sons. The family wants to help others achieve their education, so they hope this scholarship will assist a young person reach their dreams. Mundo Sr. died on October 22, 2014 and Marie died on August 22, 1990.
