Alfred E. McCarthy, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in July 1993 following the accidental death of Al McCarthy, Jr. A 1983 graduate of Wakefield High School, he was survived by his wife and an infant son. He had been employed by the Wakefield Item and was working for J.N. Phillips Glass Company at the time of his death. His widow described Al as a music lover who loved to sing. He played the violin and trumpet as well as the acoustic and electric guitar. He loved old cars, animals and traveling – particularly to Grateful Dead concerts. Although neither Al nor his wife went on to higher education, Ms. McCarthy graciously established this fund to assist young people in need of financial assistance to reach their educational goals.
