The Waite Family has resided on Oak Street in Greenwood from 1911. Marcus Warren Waite, father of the family, was a genealogy buff and is listed in the Compendium of American Genealogy. He wrote several books on the subject, which have been deposited at the New England Historical Genealogy Society of Boston, and public libraries and historical societies in Denver, Colorado, Rhode Island, Hanover, NH and Vermont. He had dreamed of attending Tufts University in 1900 but was denied a college education due to lack of funds. In those days, there were no student loans or scholarships available to him. He was a customs inspector from 1918 until his retirement in 1952. The family is interested in helping students, and prefers the award from this fund go to a resident of Oak Street where he lived until his death in 1968.
