Gov. John A. and Jennie Benedetto Volpe Fund

When former Governor Volpe came to Wakefield in June 1987 to lecture at the High School on his new book, The Life of an Immigrant’s Son, Mr. & Mrs. William R. Spaulding presented him with this fund. Governor Volpe died in November 1994. The Wakefield High School library was named in his honor and houses the works, writings and memorabilia of Governor Volpe. A three term Massachusetts Governor, Ambassador to Italy and the first Federal Highway Administrator, Volpe served as an inspiration to many. He was born at 259 Water Street and that spot is commemorated with a plaque. He received his college education at night, working days with his father. He served in the Seabees in WWII serving as a Lt. Commander. His construction business became one of the leading firms in the country and he became a self-made millionaire. While his life may have brought him in the company of politicians, ambassadors and kings, he never forgot his Wakefield roots and his many local friends.
