Mary suffered from Cystic Fibrosis from birth, but never let it get in the way of accomplishing her goals. Mary was active in the CF community educating parents of children living with CF and supporting people of all ages living with the disease. Mary played golf and coached a girls High School tennis team. She graduated from college and worked in banking until just before her death. Mary died on New Year’s Eve, 1996 during a risky, double lung transplant operation, a transplant she had long awaited. Deeply religious, Mary was not nervous about the surgery. She told her family and friends that if she died not to be sad for her. Her friends admired her courage and her faith and decided to establish a scholarship fund in her memory, holding a fundraising dance in October 1997. Mary’s parents completed her friends’ initial efforts and made the fund permanent in 1998.
