Raymond “Jess” Surette Fund

Jess Surette was the founder of the former Hazelwood Restaurant (now Brothers Deli) on Main Street in Wakefield center. Jess certainly fulfilled his dream and desire to establish a restaurant in Wakefield that would provide a family atmosphere along with excellent home cooking. His son, Richard, who took over the restaurant in 1984, initiated this fund in his father’s memory, with the stipulation that the fund have a preference for a student in the field of culinary arts. Richard served as a sergeant in the Air Force during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion Post in Berwick, ME. This fund not only continues the memory of prominent Wakefield residents Jess and Richard Surette, it also provides a stepping-stone to future culinary careers for deserving Wakefield High School students.
