Gertrude Mowry Spaulding Continuing Education Fund

This fund was established by Gertrude’s husband Bill to assist Wakefield students who are returning to higher education, particularly after a lapse of several years following high school. The intent of the fund is to help re-educate Wakefield’s current workers for the highly complex and ever-changing technological world of the future. Gertrude Spaulding was the recipient of many awards during her lifetime. She received the prestigious Carrie Chapman Catt Award, which was presented to her by the League of Women Voters in which she was extremely active. The Wakefield Business and Professional Women’s Organization named her “Woman of the Year”. The Chamber of Commerce honored her and her husband as Wakefieldians of the Year and both served as Grand Marshals of the 1994 Independence Day Parade. Just before her death in 2001, Gertrude was recognized as “The Lady of the Lake” for her commitment to environmental concerns in her beloved town of Wakefield. She also served as a member of the Wakefield School Committee from 1960 until 1969 and, for eight years, she was a member of the Massachusetts Board of Education. She held memberships in countless local and regional organizations. Truly it can be said that Gertrude Spaulding enriched the lives of a great many people and for that we are indeed grateful.
