Carmen Urbonas grew up in rural Maine, raised by hardworking parents who actively encouraged and supported their children’s education while instilling the importance of serving others. Carmen graduated from Fisher College with an Associate’s Degree, Highest Honors in 1985. Her work career led her to Human Resources, including heading up HR for the Mass. chapter of a national school-to-work program.
Married with two daughters, Carmen lived in Wakefield, Massachusetts from 1990-2019. Carmen served the town and its public schools, first as a parent volunteer, co-founding student cultural enrichment programs including Authorfest, still enjoyed by children today. Inspired by her own mother’s long record of local public service, Carmen was also elected twice as a Member of the Wakefield School Committee, serving from 2004-2010.
Having spent so many years serving her community and supporting her family, Carmen took long overdue time for herself: She recently returned to school and earned her Bachelor’s Degree (Summa cum Laude) in Business Communications from Northeastern University in 2013.
This scholarship honors Carmen Urbonas for her dedicated service to the town of Wakefield and her passion for improving public education. The ideal award recipient will be a Northeastern Husky, and a continuing education student / adult learner.
