H. Stanley & Beatrice E. MacLellan Art Scholarship

This fund was established in loving memory of H. Stanley and Beatrice E. MacLellan, by their family, with the stated preference that awards be made to students with particular interest in art. Beatrice (Richdale) MacLellan, was born in 1916 in Providence, RI. Shortly thereafter, she became a long-time resident of the Melrose-Wakefield area, until moving to Wolfeboro, NH, in 2001, where she died in 2010. A graduate of Melrose High School, she attended the School of Practical Art in Boston and continued her art education with such well-known teachers as Margaret Fitzhugh Brown, Helen Van Wyk, and Taddeus Klodnicki. Stan MacLellan, born in Malden, MA in 1907, was a graduate of Malden High School and Bowdoin College, Class of 1930. At the time of his retirement from the National Casket Company in 1974, he was New England Division Manager and a member of its Board of Directors. Upon their marriage in 1935, the MacLellans moved to Wakefield and raised their children, Karen and Bruce, in the community. During this time, Bettie pursued a career as a professional pastel portrait artist and teacher, receiving recognition of her accomplishments in oil, watercolor, still life, and landscape, as well. Sharing her love of art was such an important part of her life that she was still teaching a class in pastels at the retirement community where she lived at the time of her death, December 12, 2010, at 94. In addition to maintaining memberships in the Concord Art Association, Lexington Arts and Crafts, and the North Shore Art Association, she was, in 2001, awarded a lifetime membership for distinguished service to the Reading, MA, Art Association. Her work can be found in private collections in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Ohio, California, Florida and Michigan. Long supportive and proud of his wife’s artistic abilities, Stan served the community in various fundraising activities for the United Fund, the Y.M.C.A. and Melrose-Wakefield Hospital. He was, until his death in 1984, a member of the Golden Rule Masonic Lodge, and as a charter member of the Bear Hill Golf Club, he served as President of the Bear Hill Association for many years. Both he and Bettie shared a life-long passion for the sport of golf.
